2024 Jobs Report Methodology

For the purpose of the 2024 Greater New Orleans Jobs Report, GNO, Inc. defines a Top Job as an occupation that:

  • Is comprised of at least 100 jobs across the region
  • Has a median hourly wage of at least $23.20 per hour (identified by MIT’s Living Wage Calculator, 2024)
  • Experienced growth from 2014 – 2024

The Greater New Orleans Jobs Report also includes On-Ramp Jobs, occupations that provide gateways to higher-wage, high-demand careers and maintain positive future growth prospects based on business development projects and economic conditions.  Wages for On-Ramp Jobs fall within 25% of the $23.20 per hour median wage threshold ($17.40 per hour) and occupations categorized as On-Ramp Jobs are denoted.

Note: This report focuses on immediate workforce development needs and pathways, so occupations that require a graduate degree or higher are limited.

Glossary

Top Job: GNO, Inc. defines a Top Job as an occupation that is comprised of at least 100 jobs across the region, has a median hourly wage of at least $23.20 per hour (identified by MIT’s Living Wage Calculator, 2024), and experienced growth from 2014 – 2024.

Job Count: Derived from Lightcast’s labor market information data. A job is considered any position in which a worker provides labor in exchange for monetary compensation. This includes those who work as employees for businesses (a.k.a. “wage and salary” employees). Unpaid family workers and volunteers are excluded from all Job Count data.

Job Growth: Derived from Lightcast’s job counts data. Growth is a net term, meaning that job loss (negative employment change) counts as zero growth.

Typical Entry-Level Education: The education level most often needed to enter an occupation. Typical entry-level education is reported at the national level, so alternate paths to employment may exist in a region of study.

Work Experience Required: The work experience level most often needed to enter an occupation. Typical work experience required is reported at the national level, so alternate paths to employment may exist in a region of study.

Skills: Most commonly technical knowledge and proficiency listed on real-world resumes, professional profiles, and job postings. Top skills are determined by O*NET by surveying a national random sample of job incumbents using standardized questionnaires. For the purposes of this report, the top five skills for each occupation as listed by Lightcast were chosen.
