GNO, Inc. Sunday Night Highlight – Super Bowl LIX will be Super Accessible
With 125 days to go until Super Bowl LIX, a recent article in FastCompany magazine highlights how New Orleans and Louisiana are leveraging the game to make the city more accessible for all.
As the story highlights, while a recent study named New Orleans the country’s most walkable city (and #4 in the world), that level of ease in getting around isn’t the case for everyone—especially Americans with disabilities, mobility or otherwise. That’s why a combination of infrastructure improvements — fixing the sidewalks, repairing the streets, and making sure the curb cuts are ADA compliant — as well as improved communication, will help ensure differently abled fans have a great experience.
Highlighted accessibility improvements include:
- Tens of millions of dollars of sidewalk repairs for better wheelchair access, throughout downtown New Orleans and the French Quarter
- Dozens of new American Disability Act (ADA) compliant curb cuts at intersections
- Removing sidewalk impediments in the French Quarter, like A-frame signs, via improved code enforcement
- Close to $500M of Super Dome improvements, which include additional accessible seating and new accessible pathways through the stadium
- Further, Rep. Troy Carter secured $5.5 million in May to study ways to improve New Orleans streetcars’ accessibility
