New Orleans was founded over three hundred years ago as a trade entrepôt. Today, the region is reinventing itself to take logistics into the future, in ways big and small.

At the highest level, the Port of New Orleans is in the process of building the Louisiana International Terminal (LIT), the only greenfield deepwater port under development in the country. When operational, LIT will allow the port to receive significantly larger vessels than today, 14,000 TEUs or more, in a state-of-the-art, clean facility.

At a more tactical level, the Port is integrating AI into its legacy operations. The Port and the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad have partnered with New Orleans-based UTC Transoceanic to deploy the country’s first AI-powered rail clearance system for oversized cargo. The technology has two components working in tandem:

• A customer-facing app that allows shippers to enter cargo dimensions, weight, and railcar specifications and receive near-instant routing recommendations
• A live “digital twin” of the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad that continuously tracks clearance data, bridge ratings, crossing geometry, and infrastructure conditions in real time

Together, they condense a process that used to take weeks of engineering studies into something that can be resolved almost immediately. For shippers moving massive power transformers, wind turbine components, refinery vessels, or industrial generators – vital components needed to keep up with the state’s historic economic growth – that speed is critical.

This matters now more than ever, as Louisiana is in the middle of an industrial construction boom, with over $110 billion of announced new projects in just two years.
