GNO, Inc. Sunday Night Highlight – New Orleans Posts Significant Educational Gains
Last week, we highlighted that New Orleans is #4 in the USA for the fastest average decline across major violent crimes, with juvenile homicide down over 70% since last year.
We noted several reasons for this remarkable improvement, from law enforcement to civic action.
But one driver of improved public safety and better lives that should not be overlooked is the post-COVID return to form, and improvement, of New Orleans K-12 schools. According to the New Schools for New Orleans:
- From 2023-2024, Orleans was Top 3 in Louisiana in test score growth
- While the nation is still generally catching up from COVID loss of learning, Orleans has now surpassed its pre-COVID performance in English and Science, and has caught up in Math
- Growth trends in Orleans are even more pronounced when looking at the percentage of students scoring “Basic+”; since last year, Orleans has grown the percentage of students earning Basic+ in grades 3-8 more than any other large district in Louisiana
