GNO, Inc. Monday Night Highlight – Global Tech Center Newlab Comes to New Orleans
In 2016, Newlab transformed the decaying Brooklyn Navy Yard into a vibrant tech hub, creating an 84,000-square-foot space for over 100 startups specializing in robotics, AI, and urban tech. This revitalization spurred Brooklyn’s industrial renaissance.
Today, we announced Newlab New Orleans. To be housed in a former U.S. Naval Station in Bywater, the project aims at attracting and growing companies focused on energy efficiency, carbon management and port infrastructure. The $50 million public-private partnership will consist of laboratory space and advanced machinery that startups can use as they attempt to turn their research and ideas into products for commercial and military use. Newlab New Orleans is coming to Louisiana through a public-private partnership that includes Greater New Orleans, Inc., Louisiana Economic Development, the City of New Orleans, Future Use of Energy in Louisiana (“FUEL”, an NSF Engine), Louisiana State University, and Shell. GNO, Inc. and partners began working on the Newlab concept in 2021. Newlab New Orleans is expected to open in the fall of 2026.
“We’re bringing Newlab to strategic regions like Louisiana that have a competitive advantage for speeding up commercialization of critical technologies. Louisiana’s legacy in commercial-scale energy projects, existing industrial infrastructure, and technical workforce create the perfect foundation to build a startup ecosystem that will future-proof the state’s economy,” said David Belt, Co-founder and CEO of Newlab.
Newlab currently operates in:
- Brooklyn
- Detroit
- Opening soon in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
