Sunday Night Highlight – Ten Reasons the $100 Billion SpaceX Deal Matters 🚀

On Tuesday in Vermilion Parish, Governor Jeff Landry, Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Susan Bourgeois, and SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell announced that SpaceX will invest $100 billion to build its largest launch facility anywhere, a spaceport on the Louisiana coast big enough to reshape how Louisiana thinks about its own economy.

As big a number as is $100 billion*, the actual impact on Louisiana and Greater New Orleans may be bigger. Here are a “Top 10” reasons why:

1. It is the largest capital investment in Louisiana history – At $100 billion, the project, called Starbase Louisiana, surpasses every prior single investment in the state
2. The jobs pay nearly double the local wage – The project is expected to create 3,000 direct jobs over ten years at an average salary of $92,600, 192% above Vermilion Parish’s current average wage. At the company’s Starbase Texas, roughly 70% of Starbase’s 4,000-plus workers are locals
3. The training pipeline is already being built – The Louisiana Community and Technical College System expects to handle the bulk of workforce training for SpaceX’s new hires. UL Lafayette is aligning engineering and cybersecurity coursework to the project, and One Acadiana is standing up Acadiana FAME, an earn-and-learn advanced manufacturing program with South Louisiana Community College, with the first students starting in fall 2027
4. Louisiana’s industrial base will benefit – Shipbuilding and marine services, metal fabrication and welding, machining, energy services, industrial gas supply, electrical and instrumentation work, heavy lift, and port logistics are the skill sets Starbase construction and operations will draw on, the same base that has long served Louisiana’s oil and gas industry
5. New Orleans East’s Michoud will benefit – Michoud sits on the Intracoastal Waterway with barge capacity that has shipped Saturn V and SLS stages for decades, and has the waterway access, skilled workforce, and manufacturing floor space that SpaceX will need to augment its operations
6. New Orleans CBD will benefit – Autonomous shipbuilder Saronic already runs a modelwhere its marine vessels are built in Franklin, Louisiana (near Lafayette), while its engineers and naval architects work out of a downtown New Orleans office. GNO, Inc. will be working for SpaceX to do the same
7. SpaceX is supporting coastal restoration – SpaceX has committed $100 million to Louisiana’s coastal master plan, administered through the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, in partnership with the state and Vermilion Parish, on land the region has been losing to erosion for decades
8. SpaceX makes South Louisiana strategically vital – After Russia cut off pipeline gas to Europe following its invasion of Ukraine, Louisiana’s LNG terminals turned the Gulf Coast into infrastructure the federal government (and world) depends on. A new high-volume launch site does the same for space.
