After being postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Xbox Game Studios Game Development Camp has set a new start date for its unique months-long opportunity to gain industry experience.
In a partnership with Unity Technologies, Louisiana Economic Development, Greater New Orleans, Inc., and New Orleans Business Alliance, Xbox’s Game Development Camp was first announced back in February at the Louisiana Entertainment Summit. The opportunity is open to developers of all skill levels and areas, including musicians, artists, project managers, and programmers, allowing them to gain hands-on experience in the field of their choice with industry leaders.
The original dates for the Development Camp hosted by Xbox’s New Orleans-based studio inXile were set for April 21 to September 24, 2020. But due to the pandemic, the camp will now begin September 28 and run until February 4. Though it will now be a completely remote project, the camp will still be coordinated from a base in New Orleans. Considering the impact the pandemic has had on the world, this is an incredible chance for a real-world look into the gaming industry.
President and CEO Michael Hecht of Greater New Orleans Inc. is reportedly very excited to open up this opportunity to aspiring industry developers, saying, “It is also a huge opportunity for locals to acquire the skills — from one of the biggest companies in the world — in order to get jobs in the sector.” He says that GNO is proud to support and offer this opportunity to local individuals looking for jobs.
Three large events will be held online to earmark the camp, along with development work, workshops, and presentations offered for participants. Powered by Unity, the company is offering support in the format of Unity licenses and technical support accessible to all developers in the program. To register for the event, aspiring developers must reside in the greater New Orleans area, but it is completely free and will not be a fulltime commitment. Registration for the Xbox Game Development Camp is open until August 14th.
