A Jefferson Parish company has bolstered its supply chain for new employees with a new academic partnership.
The University of New Orleans announced today it is teaming with Laitram to offer a year-round internship program for students in the College of Engineering. Eligible UNO students will receive an hourly wage for 10 to 20 hours of work per week for the company and a $500 tuition reimbursement each semester.
The internships will be with one of Laitram’s four operating divisions: Intralox, Laitram Machinery Inc., Lapeyre Stair Inc. and Laitram Machine Shop. UNO instructors will select the students to be considered for the internship program.
“The partnership will provide an outstanding opportunity for UNO engineering students to gain valuable practical experience, enhancing their technical and professional development,” said Paul Schilling, UNO’s professor and chair of mechanical engineering.
UNO is the third academic partner for Laitraim, which has similar programs in place involving Southeastern Louisiana University and Delgado Community College.
In a statement from UNO, Michael Hecht, president and CEO of Greater New Orleans Inc., called the partnership a “common sense education-workforce collaboration” that aligns the region’s advanced manufacturing sector with higher education.
“We have been very pleased with our engineering interns from UNO in the past, and we look forward to beginning this formal partnership with the university,” said Chuck Ledet, engineering manager at Laitram Machinery.
Laitram, based in Harahan, is a global manufacturing company that holds 700 patents and employs more than 1,800 people worldwide.
