Greater New Orleans Inc. pushes for more economic development

NEW ORLEANS — Hundreds of people packed the Hyatt Regency hotel Wednesday for a meeting with Greater New Orleans Inc.

Organizers of the meeting said their goal is to bring more economic development and business to the city. Local leaders and business officials met for a luncheon, where they touched on what is working and what needs to change.

Greater New Orleans Inc. officials said DXC Technology coming to New Orleans was a big win for the city, bringing thousands of jobs. British Airways coming to the city was also a win. They said last time a direct flight was offered was 1982.

Going forward, Greater New Orleans Inc. officials said what is needed is flood insurance that is more affordable, and for the state to have a more sustainable budget.

Officials said those issues can be tackled by working with the national Coalition for Sustainable Flood Insurance and making changes to the state constitution.

“When we think about what we didn’t get this year, one of our biggest challenges is actually the New Orleans brand,” Michael Hecht, president and CEO of Greater New Orleans Inc. said. “People love New Orleans around the world, but they don’t necessarily think of us as a technology hub, or as a great manufacturing center, so changing that brand is critical to making sure people think about us and have a look.”
