NextGen Council Policy Series: Constitutional Convention & Pension Reform
11:30am - 1:00pm
1100 Poydras St.
New Orleans, LA
There are volumes of recommendations on how to fix Louisiana’s finances – but without tackling two key issues, improvement will continue to lag.
First, with the 4th longest constitution in the U.S., Louisiana’s ability to address major funding issues is problematic. How could changing the state constitution affect this issue, and how would a constitutional convention work?
Second, our public retirement systems for state workers have chronically burdened the state budget and Louisiana will fall far short of the assets needed to pay future pension obligations. Are these problems solvable?
This session will explore the fundamental changes needed for a strong financial future and how reforms may be structured.
