Southeast Super-Region Committee
An unprecedented partnership
GNO, Inc. and the Baton Rouge Area Chamber (BRAC) have taken the unprecedented step of forming the Southeast Super-Region Committee (SRC), the purpose of which is to foster cooperation for mutual benefit between the Baton Rouge and Greater New Orleans regions. The SRC is formed of approximately 12 members from GNO, Inc. and BRAC, respectively, and will have an initial focus on three projects:
- Infrastructure: Louis Armstrong International Airport and New Orleans/Baton Rouge rail connection.
- Policy: Higher Education (see below)
- Business Development: International Trade
The first meeting of the SRC was in May, and the committee will now meet bi-monthly.
BILD: Higher Education (Businesses for Improving Louisiana’s Development)
The SRC has led the way in creating a statewide coalition of business organizations focused on strategic higher education reform.
Over thirty business entities representing all areas of the state have joined to advocate for improvements in Louisiana’s higher education system. The coalition suggests four specific reforms:
- Implementing the performance-based funding formula proposed by the Louisiana Board of Regents
- Raising admission standards at four-year institutions
- Granting sole authority to adjust self-generated revenue to the system’s management boards
- Establishing “centers of excellence” at Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) campuses and eliminating unproductive and duplicative programs
