Greater New Orleans Inc. is proud to support the drainage millage renewal on the ballot in the city of New Orleans on Saturday. Flood events are increasing in both frequency and severity. Continued investment in both flood protection features and improved drainage are critical if greater New Orleans is going to thrive in an increasingly volatile weather environment. This millage renewal will allow the city to continue to make critical investments by funding improvements to our drainage system as well as needed operations and maintenance work.
Drainage systems and flood protection features also are significant factors in determining flood insurance rates. Continuing to fund drainage improvements will likely further drive down flood insurance premiums. In fact, more than 97 percent of New Orleanians are experiencing a reduction in their flood insurance premiums due in part to improved drainage. Keeping flood insurance affordable will be a key challenge in the years to come. It is imperative that we take every action available as citizens to ensure flood insurance remains affordable, and passing this millage renewal will allow the city to take these needed actions.
Finally, this millage renewal will continue to create jobs for New Orleanians in construction, operation and maintenance for years to come. These jobs will provide workers with real-world, transferable skillsets and career pathways for future employment.
Adequate flood protection is key to the economic vitality and quality of life of our city. And remember – this is not a new tax! Please vote “yes” to the drainage millage renewal on Dec. 10.
