Condor Airlines’ nonstop flight from New Orleans to Frankfurt makes its debut

Condor Airlines on Wednesday evening (May 3) launched its new nonstop from New Orleans to Frankfurt, Germany. The flight is one of two new nonstop European connections added at Louis Armstrong International Airport this spring.

The inaugural flight — flown on a 259-passenger Boeing 767 — landed in New Orleans at 6:05 p.m., just as thunderstorms began to dissipate. Water cannons shot an arch of water into the stiff, post-storm winds in a traditional salute as the new flight turned into its gate at Armstrong Airport.

The route is currently scheduled to run seasonally, from May to early October. Flights, which start at $349 one-way for economy fare, leave New Orleans Wednesday and Saturday evenings, arriving in Germany the following day.

Jens Boyd, director of group long-haul and revenue management for Thomas Cook Group Airlines, Condor’s parent company, said the airline will be evaluating whether to make the flight year-round at some point in the future, though that decision will depend on how many people use the route.

Local business and tourism promised to fill planes flying from New Orleans to Frankfurt.

“You can count on us, Condor Airlines, to keep our foot on the gas,” said Kristian Sonnier, vice president of communications and public relations for the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Condor Airlines bills itself as a low-cost alternative for travel to and from Europe, flying to a range of U.S. secondary markets, from Baltimore to Portland, Ore. The airline on Tuesday announced a new nonstop from San Diego to Germany.

Boyd said the New Orleans-to-Frankfurt flights will utilize refurbished planes and include economy, premium and business class seats with dedicated entertainment consoles. A hot meal and breakfast is included in the fare.

Business class, which starts at $879 one-way, has flat-bed seats, which allow passengers to fully recline and sleep for the 11-hour overnight flight.

Boyd said the “primary purpose” of the flight is to bring more Germans to New Orleans, a destination he says many Europeans overlook.

The new Condor flight is the second European connection added at Armstrong Airport this year. In March, British Airways started a new, year-round nonstop to London’s Heathrow Airport.

Michael Hecht, president and CEO of Greater New Orleans Inc., said the new flights are already working to raise interest in New Orleans among other carriers.

“Our focus now is a dual focus,” Hecht said. “Of course, we’re thinking about other future possibilities, including nonstop flights to Asia. But our primary focus is making sure these current announcements work well. Now that we’ve caught the plane, we have to fly it.”
