Vol. 9: AeroMexico Launches International Flight

AeroMexico Launches International Service to Mexico City and Honduras

An international aviation consultant, who I happen to know and respect, was quoted in a recent article as saying, “It could be a while before New Orleans Airport has any expanded international service.” Well, they say time flies, and in this case it does indeed – to Mexico and Central America.

AeroMexico has signed an agreement with GNO, Inc. to begin daily direct service to Mexico City, with continuing service to San Pedro Sula, in Honduras. Starting in July, you’ll be able to get to Mexico in two hours – as opposed to the current seven to ten.

This happy story, defying both recent history and the experts, is one of partnership and perseverance.

In terms of partnership, it is a perhaps unprecedented public/private collaboration. Led by the vision and commitment of the City of New Orleans, it was also made possible by support from Louis Armstrong International Airport, Louisiana Economic Development, the New Orleans Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, Entergy, Oschner, First NBC Bank, Adams & Reese, and, of course, our new friends and business colleagues from AeroMexico.

In terms of perseverance, this is a deal that could have died dozens of times. But thanks to the commitment and vision of the group I just named, it did not. We kept at it, with GNO, Inc. playing the role of broker, until we got it right for everyone.

The benefits of this partnership and perseverance will be legion. A two-hour direct flight to from New Orleans to Mexico City will benefit business trade, banking, leisure tourism and medical tourism. And although this is just one flight, six times a week, I am confident that it will precipitate other flights, and will serve as the thin edge of the wedge in our drive to re-establish our airport in its rightful place as the Gateway to the Americas.

This historic flight will be supported by the other work of GNO, Inc for the region:

  • An energy plan that will create $25B in new revenue for the state
  • An international trade study, from Plaquemines to Baton Rouge, that will ensure we are ready for the Panama Canal in 2014
  • Support for turning Michoud into a world-class high-tech manufacturing park
  • A digital media alliance that is marking the emergence of the creative professional sector in our region with the grand opening of The Intellectual Property building
  • And legislation that will encourage entrepreneurship and business growth

So, when we board the inaugural flight this July, with passports and hopes for the future in hand, we will be able to say that while, perhaps, we are taking just one small flight for man (with no stop-over in Houston), we will be making one giant leap for the Greater New Orleans region.

Thank you,

Michael Hecht
President and CEO
