Vol. 34: There’s No “I” in RESTORE

Passage of the RESTORE Act is very good news for Greater New Orleans. By far our best hope to drive significant dollars towards the task of stabilizing our eroding coast, the RESTORE Act is of existential importance to our region, and all of the Gulf.

But given Louisiana and the Gulf Coast’s contributions to America – 40% of seafood is provided by the Gulf and Louisiana produces 30% of our nation’s crude oil – the RESTORE Act is important to the entire nation. With this in mind, we are grateful to the individuals and organizations from around the United States that came together to ensure that penalty fees from the Deepwater Horizon spill are dedicated to the areas most impacted – so Greater New Orleans and the entire coast can continue to prosper and serve the USA.

From Senator Boxer, Chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, to Leader Cantor in the House, we enjoyed nationwide legislative support from important leaders in Congress. And with over 100 organizations from Texas to Florida signing on with their approval, we also enjoyed unprecedented regional cooperation, as well.

On top of the RESTORE victory, Congress reauthorized the National Flood Insurance Program for a full five years, marking the end of short term extensions of the program. Senator Vitter was instrumental in ensuring this reauthorization, which gives policy holders the peace of mind that their businesses and homes have adequate coverage as we enter hurricane season.

Our delegation provided inspired bipartisan leadership, especially Senator Landrieu and Congressman Scalise, the lead sponsors of the RESTORE Act. But we couldn’t have done it alone. In the end, we proved that there’s no “I” in RESTORE, but there is a big “US” in the USA.
