Vol. 29: The Economic Engine that Could

At last week’s Louisiana Industrial Development Executive Association (LIDEA) Annual Meeting, Ron Starner, the General Manager of Site Selection magazine, gave a keynote with the wordy but compelling title: “The Louisiana Turnaround – How the State Won the Site Selection Competitiveness Award and What It Must Do to Remain on Top.”

In his presentation, Ron told the remarkable story of how in just a few short years, Louisiana has gone from a non-contender to the #1 state in the country for business competitiveness. For 2010, the Top 10 states were:

  1.      Louisiana
  2.      Virginia
  3.      Texas
  4.      North Carolina
  5.      South Carolina
  6.      Kansas
  7.      Georgia
  8.      Indiana
  9.      Pennsylvania
  10.      Ohio

Key success factors for Louisiana cited by Starner included: ethics, tax, and workforce reform; new programs at Louisiana Economic Development; targeted incentives; aggressive marketing; elected leadership; economic development leadership; and broad post-Katrina investment.

Importantly, Starner also spoke about what we will have to do to maintain and grow this momentum into the future: ensure that our laws, institutions, and culture remain pro-business, pro-innovation, and – most of all – pro-active; constantly telling our redemption story to the world, so that we create a virtuous cycle of success, and continue to rebrand Louisiana and Greater New Orleans as one of the best opportunities in the country for a business, or a family.
