Vol. 23: #1 with a Brain

The encouraging evidence has been mounting:

  • Forbes ranked New Orleans a top ten city for relocation
  • Tulane had more applications this year — 44,000 — than any other private school in the country
  • New Orleans is now the #1 Teach for America location, per capita, in the U.S.
  • Greater New Orleans leads the nation in long-term real wage growth
  • Louisiana has enjoyed three years of net in-migration for the first time in decades

But now it is irrefutable: Greater New Orleans is the brain-gain champion. In a recent article entitled “America’s Biggest Brain Magnets,” the journal New Geography provides the results of a comprehensive survey that took the 52 largest metropolitan areas in the country, and ranked them by gains in people with college educations compared to the population over 25 years of age between 2007 and 2009, using the latest data from the American Community Survey.

The results are a gratifying validation of the story we have been telling folks around the country: that Greater New Orleans is “hot,” that people want to be part of our historic transformation, and that we are at an inflection point — reaching a critical mass of talent that then attracts even more.

And the evidence goes on. In a national survey of over 1,000 households, 82% of respondents said that Louisiana and Greater New Orleans are better than before. And up to 40% said they would consider moving here – for the right job.

Now, therein lies the rub. The brains that are here today may be gone soon after tomorrow if they can’t find the good jobs and the good quality of life that will allow them to stay. This, then, is the challenge before us at GNO, Inc.: to create the right conditions so that the best and the brightest will not only want to come to Greater New Orleans, but will be able to stay and enrich our community for the future.
