Vol. 10: Welcome to Greater New Orleans 2.0

Welcome to Greater New Orleans 2.0

A few weeks ago, GNO, Inc., along with Idea Village and other partners, held a grand opening party for the “I.P. (Intellectual Property) Building,” previously code-named the Tech Quarter. Located in the Warehouse District of New Orleans (643 Magazine St.), and soon to be replicated with similar spaces on the North Shore and in the River Region, the “I.P.” is both practically and symbolically important.

Practically, the I.P. will house some of the most innovative firms in our region, including Turbo Squid, iSeatz, Carrollton Technology Partners, Launch Pad, Couhig Partners and Idea Village. The I.P. is not an incubator, but rather just an agglomeration of like-minded companies in a cool space. The result is that, for the first time, these firms will enjoy the benefits of working in close proximity, sharing energy, ideas, and even employees. Moreover, they will play together, too, as the I.P. also includes a fitness spa, wine bar / cafe and concierge service.

Symbolically, the I.P. represents the heart of the creative professional revolution that is manifesting in the “new” Greater New Orleans, GNO 2.0. This is important for a couple of reasons. First, for companies seeking to locate in New Orleans (and GNO, Inc. is now working with many), the I.P. clearly demonstrates the viability and vibrancy of the creative and digital media industry in our region. They see the I.P., and they believe. Second, for the media, it provides a centerpiece for stories. A well-known national magazine traveled to our region recently, interested in doing a small article on entrepreneurship. After seeing the I.P., and meeting the companies, this brief mention transformed into a front-page cover story on how innovation is powering the comeback of Greater New Orleans. Scheduled to publish in August, this national publicity will provide priceless positive exposure.

The fact is that with our unique culture, lower cost of labor and rich incentives, the Greater New Orleans region is perfect for creative professional companies and employees. If the historic economy of our region was based off large pieces of fixed capital, the future may increasingly rely on small pieces of mobile capital – that is, people.

Through initiatives like the I.P., GNO, Inc. will continue to encourage this investment.

Welcome to the future.
