Louisiana Receives Two Key Business Rankings

New Orleans, La. — This week, Louisiana received two key business rankings from Site Selection and CEO magazine that highlight the state’s economic growth and friendly business climate.

Site Selection rated Louisiana no. 2 in its list of Top Competitive States for 2014. In its evaluation of economic development performance by each of the 50 states, the magazine singled out Louisiana for its record of new and expanded facilities, high capital investment, and substantial job creation. Following a fourth-place finish in 2013, Louisiana’s new ranking places it in the top seven for the sixth consecutive year.

Also, Chief Executive reported that CEOs nationwide rank Louisiana No. 7 in the U.S., the state’s highest position ever, in the magazine’s annual ranking of Best & Worst States for Business. The report continues the state’s ascent in national business climate rankings, with Louisiana showing the greatest improvement of any state in the U.S. over the past seven years. Since January 2008, Louisiana has improved a nation-best 40 spots in the Chief Executive survey.

“Louisiana and Greater New Orleans are at the highest point in most every ranking in decades,” said Michael Hecht, President and CEO of Greater New Orleans, Inc. “We should take this recognition not only as a validation of our efforts, but also as an affirmation that we should continue to support economic development, which is building the future, even as we address our current budget challenges.”

Since January 2008, Louisiana has secured significant economic development wins that are resulting in more than 91,000 new jobs and more than $62 billion in new capital investment in Louisiana. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Louisiana’s private-sector job growth since January 2008 ranks second best in the South and seventh best in the U.S.

Prior to 2008, Louisiana never ranked among the top 10 states in the U.S. in any national ranking of state business climates. Louisiana now places among the Top 10 states in five national business climate rankings: Area Development, Business Facilities, Chief Executive, DCI and Site Selection. Additionally, Business Facilities named LED FastStart® the nation’s best state workforce training program for the last five consecutive years, describing the program as “the gold standard for workforce training solutions.”
