NEW ORLEANS, LA. — Today, Greater New Orleans, Inc. and the New Orleans Pelicans announced a new partnership to promote Greater New Orleans as a great place to live, work, and do business. The organizations are also joining forces to educate the general public about the need and plans for coastal restoration and the opportunity it presents for the region.
“GNO, Inc. is proud to partner with the Pelicans to promote Greater New Orleans’ economic growth and to build awareness of how restoration projects will build a more resilient coast and economy,” said Michael Hecht, President and CEO of Greater New Orleans, Inc. “Louisiana’s coast produces 30% of the nation’s energy, 30% of the nation’s seafood, and is a major commerce hub for the country. The Pelicans and GNO, Inc. are committed to together sustaining our most fundamental asset, the coast, and to ensuring that it provides not just protection, but economic opportunity for businesses and residents in Greater New Orleans.”
“The New Orleans Pelicans are honored to partner with Greater New Orleans, Inc. in an effort to further educate and enhance the importance of coastal restoration in Louisiana,” said Pelicans Owner/Vice Chairman of the Board Rita Benson LeBlanc. “It’s imperative to recognize how important it is to the continued positive momentum that is being established and the overall success of our state by recognizing the impact that our coast has on our quality of life. We are blessed with crucial natural resources across Louisiana and we all share in the responsibilities associated with properly managing these in an effort to better sustain and develop our state. In Louisiana, we turn adversity and challenges into job growth and economic development. Through education, continued awareness, enhancement projects and high quality stewardship, such as are currently being provided by GNO, Inc., we can provide a critical platform and embrace this challenge head on.”
Over the past decade, coastal restoration has emerged as an issue of critical importance to Southeast Louisiana. Since the 1930s, Louisiana has lost 1,900 square miles of coastal acreage to erosion – with an average loss of 24 square miles per year between 1990 and 2000. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill brought this issue to the forefront, and the recent passage of the RESTORE Act has ensured funding for projects to stabilize our coastline and defend against future loss.
GNO, Inc. has identified coastal restoration as an opportunity to ensure Southeast Louisiana’s economic future: both by defending existing commerce in coastal communities and nurturing a local industry sector that will generate revenue and train and employ residents. GNO, Inc. is actively working to capitalize on the economic opportunities of coastal restoration through the development of Emerging Environmental. Emerging Environmental is a growing regional industry sector that creates jobs by addressing environmental issues in the area of energy, waste and water.
