ChenMed Announces New Healthcare Software Development Center In New Orleans

Today, Gov. Bobby Jindal and ChenMed CEO Christopher Chen, M.D., announced the expansion of the company’s ChenTech subsidiary and the establishment of a new software development center in the Central Business District of New Orleans. ChenTech will create 50 new direct jobs at the software development center, with an average salary of $83,000 per year, plus benefits. LED estimates the project will result in an additional 51 new indirect jobs, for a total of more than 100 new jobs.Using multiple programming languages (Java, PHP, HTML5 and iOS), ChenTech develops software applications for physicians, hospitals and clinics. The software products primarily will be used for serving ChenMed’s Medicare-eligible patient population, but the ChenTech programmers in New Orleans also will develop applications for other healthcare providers. ChenMed market innovations have created user-friendly interfaces to treat patients more effectively at a reduced cost.

“ChenMed’s announcement of a major expansion of its ChenTech subsidiary is a double win for greater New Orleans,” said President and CEO Michael Hecht of Greater New Orleans Inc. “Playing in both the medical and technology sectors, ChenMed is the archetype of the new New Orleans company: innovative, nimble and fast-growing. GNO Inc. welcomes the ChenMed team.”

Gov. Jindal said, “Today’s announcement joins a long list of technology sector wins that prove Louisiana is quickly becoming a beacon for expansion in the digital media and software industries. Louisiana is home to a major hub of software centers and corporate headquarters because of our great business climate, strong infrastructure and highly skilled technology workforce. These wins continue to bring great high-paying tech jobs to our state that allow our people to pursue the careers of their dreams right here at home. Great companies like ChenTech are making major investments in our state because they know there is no better time to expand in the software industry than right now in Louisiana.”

ChenMed already operates four medical clinics in the greater New Orleans area under the JenCare brand, with more than 80 healthcare professionals serving more than 2,500 patients at clinics in Kenner, Metairie, Mid-City and Gretna locations. ChenMed’s roots began more than 25 years ago with the founding of the Chen family medical practice in Miami by the husband-and-wife team of Dr. James Chen, a medical doctor with a Ph.D. in biochemistry, and Mary Chen, the company’s chief operating officer. Medical obstacles that Dr. James Chen encountered as a cancer patient motivated him to launch the ChenMed business as an innovative primary care model for the nation’s oldest and neediest populations. The Chens’ sons, Chris and Gordon, are physicians and executives in the privately held ChenMed healthcare organization.

“ChenTech delivers real technology value by proving and continually refining offerings with physician and patient feedback from actual clinical use,” said ChenMed CEO Christopher Chen. “We achieve superior ChenMed patient outcomes, such as achieving 38 percent fewer hospitalizations, and superior patient satisfaction levels as measured by Net Promoter Scores consistently averaging in the low- to mid-90s. These remarkable results for Medicare-eligible seniors could not be achieved without powerful, nimble and proprietary technologies pioneered by ChenTech.”

ChenMed has experienced rapid growth, expanding to a primary care network of more than 35 locations in six states: Chen Neighborhood Medical Centers in Florida and JenCare Neighborhood Medical Centers in Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Virginia and Louisiana. ChenMed launched ChenTech in 2011 so that the company could begin sharing proven medical technology tools it had been pioneering for decades.

LED began discussing Louisiana expansion opportunities with the company in May. ChenTech has begun hiring professionals for the New Orleans software development center and will reach full employment in two to three years.

To secure the project, the State of Louisiana offered a competitive incentive package that includes the services of LED FastStart®, the nation’s No. 1-ranked state workforce development program. ChenTech also is expected to utilize Louisiana’s Digital Interactive Media and Software Development Incentive.

“We’re thrilled to welcome ChenMed and their new software development center to New Orleans,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “The addition of high-paying, high-tech jobs demonstrates our increasing ability to attract innovative new firms into the market. ChenTech is an important addition to our growing technology scene.”

“We are tremendously excited to welcome ChenTech’s expansion to Orleans Parish,” said President and CEO Rodrick Miller of the New Orleans Business Alliance. “The selection of New Orleans for ChenTech’s new software development center underscores the competitiveness of the New Orleans market and further strengthens our Creative Digital Media industry cluster. ChenTech’s plan to hire 50 people with an average salary of $83,000 contributes to the city’s overall goal of creating quality jobs and wealth for our residents.”
