NEW ORLEANS – Gen. Douglas O’Dell, the federal coordinator for the Gulf Coast’s recovery, today announced a $7.5 million grant through the U.S. Department of Labor to train New Orleans-area workers for high-skill, high-wage jobs.
The grant is targeted to industries considered to be ripe for growth and expansion, including advanced manufacturing, petro-chemical and alternative energy, international trade and the creative arts.
The Louisiana Workforce Commission will administer the grant, which will assist about 1,200 workers from 15 Louisiana companies affected by permanent closures and mass layoffs. Between Feb. 1 and Aug. 11, layoff notices were issued by 15 companies throughout Louisiana, including companies in the manufacturing, government contracting, forest products and aerospace industries.
The funding will also aid another 300 long-term displaced workers impacted by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Of the 1,500 workers, about 370 have been certified for Trade Adjustment Assistance.
“This $7.5 million grant will provide re-employment services to 1,500 workers, including 300 Louisianans experiencing long-term displacement caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.
The 18 parishes to receive funds: Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Claiborne, De Soto, Jefferson, Lincoln, Natchitoches, Orleans, Plaquemines, Red River, Sabine, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany and Webster.
Of the $7.5 million, $2.03 million will be released initially. Remaining funds will be allocated as the state shows a need for more assistance.
O’Dell also praised Gov. Bobby Jindal for his work force initiatives.
“Gov. Jindal is working tirelessly to make important changes in the way Louisiana does business to build a stronger future for New Orleans and the entire state,” O’Dell said.
The grant is in addition to $400 million the U.S. Department of Labor has provided to the Gulf Coast since Hurricane Katrina.
