Digital Media Alliance General Meeting
The GNO Digital Media Alliance is off to an auspicious start: thanks to our members, we are currently working with multiple firms interested in moving to our region, marketing in competing cities, working with the Administration on extending key legislation, and moving closer to establishing a risk equity fund. Thanks for all of your support, and we look forward to seeing you at the next general meeting, April 14. Please find some recent highlights below.
Good News
The IP, a.k.a. The Intellectual Property (The “Tech Quarter) Opens– GNO, Inc., in partnership with the Idea Village, is thrilled to announce that on April 16, “The IP,” a.k.a. “The Intellectual Property” will officially open in the Warehouse District. The IP will be home to some of the top technology and creative firms in the region, and will serve as the physical and symbolic heart of our creative professional revolution. Stay tuned for news of the restaurant / wine bar in the IP, “Capdeville.”
“Where Y@ Pack” takes SxSW – Over 30 creative professionals from our region took Austin and the South by Southwest festival by storm, spreading the word of the extraordinary opportunities that are available in our region for the creative sector. Outreach activities included a booth at the SxSW trade show, a branded bus, t-shirts and a standing room only networking party.
Second Line Stages Opens – Opening near the recently completed River Garden Housing Community, this 90,000-square-foot studio will combine new construction with restoration of a historic warehouse. It will include three sound stages (18,000; 12,000; and 7,500 square feet) production offices, and a screening theater. Construction is expected to be completed in December. In addition to becoming the nation’s first green-certified [LEED Silver] studio complex, Second Line Stages will also become Louisiana’s first full-service, state-of-the-art media production facility.
“Treme” – An HBO pilot being shot over the next several weeks is set in the historic Treme neighborhood of New Orleans, and is an indication of the ongoing viability of filmmaking in our region.
Imagination Movers – A high-energy entertainment group for children is in the middle of the second season of filming for their Disney television series at the Nims Center in Jefferson.
Upcoming Events
Sync Up (April 24-25 and May 1-2) – In the core of the region’s most intense music oriented event, Jazz Fest, will be Sync Up – the Jazz and Heritage Talent exchange. A series of conference sessions will be held on the mornings of April 24-25 and May 1-2, 2009 at The Jazz & Heritage Gallery located at 1225 N. Rampart Street. Sync Up aims to bring together music industry professionals learn and connect with artists and other professionals alike.
SIGGRAPH (August 3-7) – The 36th International Conference and Exhibition on computer graphics and interactive techniques will be held in New Orleans this year from August 3-7, with the DMA having a significant presence at the event. Online registration is currently available; and in addition, if your work involves computers, visual experiences, and/or innovative interactions, consider submitting your achievements to SIGGRAPH 2009 and share them with tens of thousands of other creative people. Their web site, www.siggraph.org, will give you more information on both the conference and submissions.
IP Opening Party (April 16) – Come join GNO, Inc., Idea Village and partners as we christen the IP, and celebrate the creative professional revolution in the Greater New Orleans region. Details to come!
